Countdown to World Youth Day
For almost one week, hundreds of thousands of young people from around the world will be in Rio de Janeiro to take part in a large religious gathering [2] that will be attended [3] by Pope Francis

WYD  is a great event that brings together young people from all over the world every two to three years. The last one was in 2011 in Madrid, Spain, and attracted more than two million people. In Brazil, the event will take place in Rio de Janeiro, from July 23 to 28. WYD is more than a religious event. Besides Masses [4]  and talks [5]  , there will be concerts and cultural events. The official website for WYD Rio 2013 says that this event is expected to attract young people with adventurous spirits from every continent, of every race, creed [6]  and religion, to celebrate friendship and concern [7]  for others. The organizers of WYD believe it will leave an important social, cultural and economic legacy for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. World Youth Day was established by Pope John Paul II in 1985.

Pope Francis's agenda in Brazil

Pope Francis will arrive in Brazil on July 22. He will be staying at Resid�ncia do Sumar�, in Rio. This is where Pope John Paul II stayed on his visits to Brazil in 1980 and 1997. The Argentine Pope will stay in Rio de Janeiro throughout WYD, celebrating Masses and attending events. Pope Francis will attend the opening of a wing [8]  of the St. Francis of Assisi hospital, which specializes in treating young drug addicts. The Pope will also visit a shanty town and meet five young prison inmates [9]  . On the morning of July 24 he will take a helicopter to Aparecida, where he will celebrate Mass. On the afternoon of the same day he will return to Rio.
